Has anyone seen Rose? I can't find her anywhere.

[Lucky for him that Jenny hasn't gone out the door yet. She's taken notice of the face.]

Dad? What's wrong?

The walls between universes aren't meant to be opened, you know.

Maybe they're finally figuring that out.

Oh, come on dad. If the Malnosso were thinking that way then I'm sure there'd be a lot more people missing then just Rose. She probably just got lost.

If she's lost, why hasn't she used her journal? It's not here, anyway.

Maybe she just dropped it somewhere.

[pause...]

Yes. Right. Well, would you look at that, me giving up already? That's not like me at all! We haven't even searched this place completely yet. Better check the cellar, and the roof, and the other houses on the street and the woods and the fields and the mountains and the chip shop... have we even got a chip shop around here? It'd be a lot easier if we did because Rose would definitely be there.

[Jenny can probably tell the cheerfulness is fake, but he's trying for her sake, at least?]

[Yes, she can tell, but she's just going to go along with it for now.]

Chip shop? I don't think we've got one of those around here. What is a chip shop?

Oh, you know, fish and chips. Or wait, you don't know, do you? Very interesting Earth dish-- they take fish, and sticks of potatoes, dunk them in a tub of heated fat and then sell them to people. Extremely bad for the hearts, but it's delicious.

Delicious or not, how could people on Earth actually eat that? Don't they know it's bad for their bodies?

Logically, yes, but humans don't work from logic. It's part of what makes them fascinating.

I suppose, but the humans back on Messaline would have never eaten something like that.

Give them some time, they'll reinvent fast food.

It's hard to believe that with what I remember of them.
